ABOUT US
The Kshatriya Society of Brisbane Inc. is a vibrant, not-for-profit community organisation that proudly represents people of Kshatriya heritage, whose roots are predominantly linked to the Indo-Fijian Kshatriya community.
Our story, however, begins much earlier in Gujarat, India, where community organisations affectionately known as Mandals were established to bring families together for cultural, religious, educational and social activities. They provided a place where people could celebrate traditions, support one another, preserve their heritage and strengthen lifelong community bonds. This proud tradition of unity, service and togetherness became a defining part of our identity and has been carried forward through each generation.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, throughout the Girmit era, Indians first arrived in Fiji under the system of indentured labour to work primarily on the sugar cane plantations. Among those who later settled in Fiji were members of the Kshatriya community, commonly known as Khatris. Through their entrepreneurial spirit, strong family values and commitment to community, they established businesses, built lasting relationships and contributed significantly to the social and economic development of Fiji.
As the Kshatriya community grew across towns and settlements throughout Fiji, families continued the long-standing tradition of gathering together to celebrate festivals, preserve traditions and strengthen community ties. Following the example established in Gujarat, local Kshatriya organisations, affectionately known as Mandals, were formed throughout Fiji. These Mandals became the heart of community life, fostering a strong sense of belonging while preserving our cultural identity, values and traditions.
Following the same tradition, members of the Kshatriya community who migrated to Australia came together to establish the Brisbane Kshatriya Mandal in the early 1990s, which was later incorporated as the Kshatriya Society of Brisbane Inc. Built on the principles of unity, culture and service, the Society continues to provide a place where families can connect, celebrate and support one another while preserving the customs, traditions and values passed down through generations.
Today, we remain committed to preserving our cultural heritage while embracing the opportunities and diversity of Australia.
Our community takes great pride and passion in organising cultural, religious and social events that preserve our traditions, strengthen our identity and keep our heritage alive for future generations. At the same time, we embrace the opportunities and diversity of life in Australia, creating a community that honours its rich history while adapting and thriving in the modern Western world.
More than a century after our ancestors first established Mandals, we are proud to continue this enduring tradition. The values of unity, respect, family, service and community remain at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to passing these traditions on to future generations so that our heritage continues to flourish for many years to come.
Guided by these enduring values, the Kshatriya Society of Brisbane continues to strengthen connections between generations, support its members and celebrate the rich cultural legacy that has been passed down through our ancestors. As we look to the future, we remain committed to building an inclusive, welcoming and vibrant community where our heritage is cherished, our traditions are celebrated and future generations are inspired to carry our legacy forward.
